The Last Polka

about

Notes from Producer Matt Brounley:

One of two purely instrumental songs in the Song Reader collection, The Last Polka is a nostalgic piano solo that, for Julian and me, strongly invokes scenes of dusty old saloons announcing last call. The lugubrious feel of the music is created by a weighty left hand part that seems to control the main theme. To us, the music effectively represents the urge to stay awake, to have one more drink as evidenced by the erratic B section and the strong staccato interruptions of the melody in the reprise.

Interesting notes about the production process include our use of a detuned piano with as much siding removed as possible, and sound effects harvested from the crowd at the Old Dublin on Cathcart and University in Downtown Montreal. The sounds of this bar should be familiar to any native montrealer feature an almost dizzying myriad of anglophones, francophones, and allophones gathering for an early evening pint.
