Notes from Producer Julian Gammon:

Upon initially receiving Beck's "Saint Dude," I was immediately reminded of the lead character in the Coen brothers' film The Big Lebowski - The Dude. A suspicion of this connection arose as soon as I saw the title of the song, and it was confirmed by the performance indication - "Abiding," which I see as a direct reference to the famous line in the film, "the Dude abides." Religious references are also plentiful within both the song and the movie, and there even exists a spiritual, albeit somewhat tongue-in-cheek group who refer to themselves as "dudeists."

With this in mind, the musical inspiration for the production of "Saint Dude" came from two sources - both the Dude's way of life and philosophical significance as a character and the soundtrack of the film of which he is the protagonist. The Dude is a laid back, mellowed out person - this needed to be reflected musically, so I chose to work with a singer I knew could represent this mood, Bud Rice. His rhythmic interpretation of the melody is true to the original, but simultaneously deviates from the underlying harmonic rhythm. The idea of "abiding," of something static and unchanging, but without the pejorative connotations that often accompany these qualifiers, is represented in this version by the static nature of the piano accompaniment figure - largely influenced by Philip Glass. And lastly, the country tinge that permeates the film's soundtrack was emulated with the help of a slide electric guitar punctuating the vocal phrases.
