Do We? We Do

about

Notes from Producer Sayre Schultz:

Effective interpretation of an existing piece of music is probably most contingent upon illuminating that same source material through the balance of old and and new; expanding, magnifying or discarding some elements while being cautious of which portions to keep intact. Although "Do We? We Do" was chosen for us it ended up fitting extraordinarily well. We were able to crawl into the simple structure of the song--and the striking lyrics-- and make it function both as a 'faithful' interpretation and a foil for our own musical values.

Our approach was intentionally loose and off-kilter: I brought a vague blueprint into rehearsal and we more or less worked it out right then and there. We came to describe our approach to the material as "free improvisation meets Tom Waits"; integral to the spirit of our arrangement was spontaneity and a sort of deranged playfulness. No two takes were alike. Although we cut, pasted, and otherwise dismantled the source material I believe that we were really able to to discover the 'soul' of the piece--something I think is reflected in the recording.
